THE 29th Stroud Half Marathon - organised by Stroud and District Athletic Club - will take place on Sunday, October 24 and, with current registrations as the benchmark, it looks set to surpass last year's entry figures, writes Sabrina Pace-Humphreys.

The organisers anticipate that over 2,500 runners will compete in this year's half marathon - one of the most popular events of its type in the UK.

This year's race is sponsored by The Stroud & Swindon Building Society and supported by Griffiths Marshall Chartered Accountants of Gloucester, Dairy Crest (SevernSide) and Trailblazer PR.

The race, which will commence at 10am, will start and finish at Marling School.

Chris Bourne, race director said: "If current figures are anything to go by, we are set to smash the number of entries recorded last year. In the run up to London 2012 running fever seems to be gripping the people of Gloucestershire and beyond.

"The half marathon course, while being slightly undulating, is good for runners of all levels. Be you a competitive club, social or fun runner, it's the race for you. We find that many runners who are looking to achieve fast times choose Stroud Half Marathon due to the course's layout."

A 'Junior Silver Mile Race' for younger competitors from the ages of 8 - 16 will also be held. This race will start approximately 15 minutes after the start of the half marathon.

"This year the Stroud and District Athletic Club is pleased to be associated with three charities - The Great Western Air Ambulance, St John Ambulance and the Williams Syndrome Foundation.

"These charities are doing some fantastic work both within the county and nationally, we are so pleased to be able to support their fundraising efforts through the half marathon. We would urge any runner who feels that they can help to raise money to get in contact with the charities via our website.

"If you don't feel confident enough to run the marathon, but would like to walk it as part of the Williams Syndrome Foundation team, please contact the charity through the Stroud Athletic Club website.

"Without the support of the general public this event would not be able to take place. The Stroud and District Athletic Club is appealing for marshals to assist on the day. If you would like to volunteer, call Chris Brown on 01453 762328 or email marshal@stroudathleticclub.co.uk."
