Police closed the road and the air ambulance was called to the scene.

The incident happened at 2.35pm on Thursday when a red Saab 900 XS collided with an elderly man.

Officers performed CPR and a Great Western air ambulance attended but the man couldn't be saved and died at the scene.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said: “There was a collision between a red Saab and a pedestrian at 2.35pm in Bisley Road in Stroud.

“The pedestrian, an elderly man, sadly died at the scene.

“The road is closed at the Bisley Road and Horns Road junction whilst a collision investigation takes place.

“Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident 260 of October 27.”

Witness Martin Baxendale, a Green district councillor who lives on Bisley Road, said he was told the collision occurred during a police chase.

“It happened right outside our house. My neighbour heard the crash,” he said.

“The police were at the scene almost immediately to perform CPR. I have been told by someone who saw the crash that it was a police pursuit.

“The car that hit the cyclist was being chased by police. It was a hit and run.

“The red Saab has been abandoned just up the road. There is metal scattered across the road. I think the bike is underneath the car.

“I was told the Saab swerved out of a way of a pedestrian walking on the pavement and then hit the man on the bike.

“Police are now going door to door collecting witness statements. It look like Bisley Road is going to be closed for several hours.”

Other witnesses have reported the incident was a hit and run – and that there were up to four people in the car.

Police have not confirmed whether they were pursuing the Saab, or whether the man who was killed was a cyclist.

The force will also not say how many people it is searching for.

Others have reported that dog units are searching for the occupant(s) of car.

The air ambulance landed at Severn View Primary Academy.
