WELL what an eventful year in Painswick.

At the start of the new year the town hall underwent a major refurbishment project and a conversion of the upper hall into a community library. This has been a very successful venture with the library now being run by local volunteers.

In May we had the honour to have the Olympic Torch come through the village, it was a glorious summer afternoon and well over six thousand people lined the street of Painswick, to watch this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Afterwards many went to the Recreation Ground to partake in an organised family event hosted by PSALMS.

In June we celebrated the Queen's diamond jubilee, with many street parties and a large picnic in the churchyard, this was attended by both young and old alike.

The History Society organised an exhibition in the town hall of royal memorabilia, we planted an oak tree in Hambutts Field, the children all received a souvenir bookmark and of course there was the traditional lighting of the Beacon.

Also in June the council awarded the title of honorary freeman to Terry Parker, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the parish of Painswick.

July saw Painswick Art Couture, a truly magnificent spectacle in which it was estimated that over ten thousand people enjoyed the event.

The History Society has now installed six information boards, these are a tremendous asset to locals and visitors alike.

The Tourist Information Centre is remaining open this year throughout the winter and has been kept busy with visitors from across the globe.

Next year we look forward to receiving funding to improve our youth facilities and sport pitches on the recreation ground.

All these wonderful achievements have been a success thanks to numerous volunteers who have made it all possible- and the council would like to extend their sincere gratitude to them all. Plus a mention to the many groups and sports clubs that make our villages a vibrant place to live.

May I wish all the readers a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year and encourage you all to visit Painswick in the year to come.
