A PETITION calling for a pedestrian crossing on the busy A46 near Nailsworth has attracted more than 750 signatures.

Councillors and residents in Nailsworth are campaigning for a crossing near Dunkirk Mill and for the 30mph zone to be extended on the Bath Road.

They say speeding traffic is a problem and they are concerned that an accident will happen due to the number of people crossing to catch the bus.

Nailsworth mayor Steve Robinson has been passionate about the scheme and has set up an action group and meetings with residents.

Over the last few months, names have been collected for the petition at Nailsworth Farmers’ Market and an action page on the town council website has been set up with a link to sign an e-petition and updates on the campaign.

At a town council meeting on Tuesday, April 16, Cllr Jonathan Duckworth said: "We have enough signatures to get a question raised at the county council’s scrutiny meeting but we still need an awful lot more to get it on the council’s agenda."

The group is working with engineering firm Renishaw to generate more signatures and are in talks with other parish councils to improve safety along the whole stretch of road towards Stroud.

Richard Gray, GCC’s local highways manager, said there had been no accidents recorded on the road in the past three years.

"We are always keen to work with local residents to improve road safety though and we have agreed to carry out an evaluation of the location," he said.

"In the meantime, we are happy to continue discussions with the local community about ways that road safety could be improved in the area."
