THE Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen’s 80th anniversary is being celebrated with a summer show, opening in Painswick on Thursday, August 15.

For the past eight decades the guild has kept alive the legacy of the Arts and Craft Movement and is one of the oldest surviving craft guilds in the UK, with almost 70 members.

Tanya Harrod, author of both The Crafts in Britain in the 20th Century and a recent biography of Michael Cardew (one of the Guild’s founding members), will be opening the show at the private view.

"It would be hard to think of anything more inspiring than 80 years of the Gloucestershire Guild - deep England and modernity coupled with a creative continuation of the Arts and Crafts Movement,” she said.

The exhibition will dedicate space to some key past members, covering the eight decades of the guild’s history.

Among them is the silversmith George Hart, representing the 1930s.

George worked with the internationally renowned Arts and Crafts designer, CR Ashbee, at Chipping Campden, and his grandson, guild member David Hart, still makes silverware.

Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen’s Summer Show opens on Thursday in the Painswick Centre, Bisley Street, Painswick. Continues until August 18.For further information visit www.guildcrafts.org.uk
