IN A decision said to be “the biggest for Stroud in 20 years” councillors voted to reject applications for supermarkets in Ryeford and Bath Road and accept one for Dudbridge Industrial Estate.

Councillors voted to pass the application for a supermarket at Dudbridge Road with a margin of one vote.

Five members of Stroud District Council voted to approve the proposals with four voting against and two abstentions.

This means that Lidl – or any other supermarket could apply to have a store on the site.

Officers had advised members to reject this application because of the risk of flooding while recommending councillors to accept the application for a store at on Bath Road, Stroud.

However councillors voted six to two in favour of refusing the Bath Road site which Asda was going to occupy.

Councillors also voted against proposals for a supermarket in Ryeford but because the application at Ryefords is at appeal the final decision will be taken out of councillors hands with the Secretary of State having the final say in the matter.
