SHE runs her town's Friendly Circle, helps the Royal British Legion, plays the piano during church services and is a volunteer driver.

Having lived in Stonehouse all her life, Barbara Davies was thrilled when she recently received the town's 'outstanding contribution to the community' award. Sue Bradley met this bubbly farmer's wife.

Barbara Davies' father set a high standard when it came to serving his community.

So he would have been more than proud of his daughter's efforts to make life better for people living around Stonehouse.

Barbara, 77, recently received the town's civic award for her 'outstanding contribution to the community over a period of years'.

The accolade recognises her sterling efforts as chairman of the Stonehouse Friendly Circle and a caseworker for the Royal British Legion.

In addition, she regularly plays the piano during Baptist services and provides lifts for people without transport of their own.

The modest farmer's wife said she was taken aback but very proud to receive the award.

"It was so unexpected," said Barbara, who has lived in Stonehouse all her life.

"But I really feel it should go to the whole committee of Stonehouse Friendly Circle and the women's section of the Royal British Legion.

"Unless you have a good committee you really cannot do very much on your own."

Barbara's father, Joseph Bailey, was awarded the Military Medal during the First World War and was a key member of the RBL for several years.

His strong sense of service now lives on in his daughter.

"My husband Ronald and I were unable to have children and I have always thought that you have to give something somehow," she explained.

Barbara had not long retired from working as a secretary when she took on the role of chairman of the Stonehouse Friendly Circle in 1990.

The group, which celebrates its diamond anniversary in September, is a popular club for the over 60s.

Its 76 members, who meet at Stonehouse Community Centre at 2pm on Fridays, enjoy watching entertainers, listening to speakers, days out and holidays along with birthday teas and festive lunches.

"The friendly circle provides somewhere for members to go every week, something for them to look forward to," she said.

"Finding entertainments for the club every week is a challenge but it keeps me going."

Meanwhile, Barbara's responsibilities as a caseworker take her all over Stonehouse and bring her into contact with ex-service men and women and widows.

"It can be distressing but on the other hand if you can help them you feel you are doing something good," said Barbara, who is also president of the women's section of the RBL in Stonehouse.

As for the future, Barbara says she has no plans to give up her various roles.

"I really enjoy it and just intend to keep going," she said.
