Stroud News and Journal:

STROUD residents have been given the opportunity to write letters in solidarity with those suffering human rights abuses around the world.

Amnesty International is asking people to take part in its annual Write for Rights campaign this December.

This year the campaign will send hundreds of personal letters to 12 different people around the world who have had their human rights abused through wrongful imprisonment, arrest or attack.

People range from a professor in China serving life in jail for fighting discrimination, a child with albinism in Malawi who is hunted for her body parts and a photojournalist in Egypt who was jailed for doing his job.

Others include Johan, a teacher in Indonesia who was tortured and jailed for waving a flag and Eren, a lawyer in Turkey who has been arrested over 100 times for speaking out for human rights.

The Amnesty mid-Glos group is holding an event at the Star Anise café in Gloucester Street, Stroud, on Wednesday December 14.

The free event runs from 7pm till 9.30pm and is open to anyone who wants to come along.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Every year, as part of Amnesty’s Write for Rights campaign, thousands of people in the UK write cards and letters in solidarity with those suffering human rights abuses around the world.

“As a result, people have been freed after being unfairly imprisoned, threats and harassment against human rights activists have reduced and lives changed for the better overall.

“We are delighted to host another Write for Rights event this year and invite everyone in the Stroud area to come along. “Your card or letter can help to make a big difference to people’s lives.

“From Máxima Acuña, a farmer in Peru who is standing up to intimidation and threats of forced eviction, to Fomosh Ivo Feh, a young man in Cameroon facing 20 years in prison for forwarding a sarcastic text message, people around the world urgently need the support of others around the world.

“Come and join us. By writing a card you can change or even save a life.

“There will be festive snacks like mince pies and warm fruit punch to buy from Nicholas and his staff, ensuring a warm and happy atmosphere.”
