Stroud News and Journal:

OWNERSHIP of three of Stroud town’s most iconic landmarks has officially switched to Stroud Town Council.

Bank Gardens, Sims Clock and Bisley Road Cemetery were transferred from Stroud District Council on Saturday, April 1.

It marks the end of months of negotiations between the two authorities and means the trio of assets remain in public hands.

The district council agreed a total funding package of £130,000 for the town council.

Stroud mayor Kevin Cranston said the town council was “very pleased” to take on ownership and praised the “successful” deal between the two authorities.

“This will enable us to look after these much loved assets for the residents of Stroud and keep them secure for the long term,” he said.

Councillor Cranston added that the transfer is likely to be the first of an ongoing programme of asset transfers.

“It makes sense for local assets to be looked after by the relevant town or parish,” he said.

“It is an exciting time for the town council as we look to taking on more assets and we look forward to working with the district council on doing this.”

The town council recently held a public consultation into purchasing the Chapel of Rest in Bisley Road Cemetery too – but decided not to due to the high cost.

Once the property of Stroud Urban District Council, the town’s assets were transferred to the district council in 1974.

An SDC spokesman said: “We are pleased to have agreed the transfer of these local community assets which Stroud Town Council have been managing for a number of years.”
