STROUD youngsters had a chance to perform with Young Musician of the Year Lydia Kenny when Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra dropped by to promote their latest children’s concert.

Several notes were produced on a garden hosepipe by Wycliffe Preparatory School pupils, while Cashes Green and Uplands Primary School children tried their hand at playing the more traditional cello, violin, clarinet and flute.

And providing a popular contrast to all these was Lydia’s collection of saxophones.

The former Stroud High School student from Cam was a hit with the pupils as she let them take turns on her alto, soprano and bass saxes.

Musical director Glyn Oxley showed the youngsters how to conduct, as his group of five orchestral musicians played excerpts from the concert programme.

Among the treats in store on the day will be music from the musical Wicked, as well as children’s author Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood set to music. This fairytale favourite ends with a terrible twist for the Big Bad Wolf – and will be narrated by Lydia.

During the concert, children will be invited to sit among the players, conduct the orchestra and play percussion instruments.

Funds will be raised for the town’s Allsorts charity for families of disabled children at the concert, which is being staged in Stroud’s Subscription Rooms, on Sunday, May 13 at 3pm.
