THE hugely popular Stroud Brass Band Festival starts its 2007-2008 season tonight with a visit from the Dutch Civil Engineering and Construction Band.

The band was formed in 1982 and all of its members have a connection with the building or civil engineering industry.

They rehearse at Harderwijk in the Netherlands and regularly perform to large audiences in their home country and abroad.

There will be nine Brass Band Festival concerts during the new season, with one performance a month between now and mid-May.

The festival organisers have booked bands of the highest ranking including the BT Band (October 20); Pennine Brass (December 8); Leyland Band (February 16) and the Pemberton Old Wigan JJB Band (April 19).

Concerts are surprisingly diverse these days, with younger band leaders introducing new pieces to the repertoire and young musicians (some still children) showing an extraordinary ability and dedication.

The Stroud Brass Band Festival is in its 43rd season and would welcome those with new ideas, who can take this long standing institution forward.

Dutch Civil Engineering and Construction Band play at Stratford Park Leisure Centre tonight, Saturday, September 29, at 7.30pm. Tickets, £9, and programmes for the 2007-08 season, are available from Stroud Tourist Information.
