Farmer's Market news with Gerb Gerbrands

What with the women’s football World Cup and the men’s cricket World Cup both being on I would normally be promoting all those lovely market treats for garden parties and barbecues, the beers and ciders, the hot dogs and burgers etc but unfortunately our rather confusing climate seems to have a different idea and, well, it’s raining rather a lot. And it’s cold!

I have it on good authority from our farmers that ‘we needed that rain’ after a dry-ish winter and spring but I’m sure the cricketers from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka would rather be knocking a few balls around the ground in the gentle English sunshine than sitting in the tea room hoping it will stop!

Despite the soggy weather the summer vegetables at market are pretty marvellous with new season potatoes, carrots, peas, broad beans, lettuce, spring onion/garlic, beetroot, chard, tomatoes, cucumbers and spinach all to the fore as well as strawberries.

Meanwhile the Welsh Cake Lady returns with her very popular welsh cakes and bara brith this week. The selection now includes a savoury cheese and bacon flavour which is proving popular and a new cake, a Devonshire apple cake with a cinnamon and oat crumble. For gift ideas see

You can order from the website for collection at the market or by post. In other news Julian Harvard returns with the first cut of sweet peas and Days Cottage announced they are about to start their 28th apple season - that’s dedication!
