Surely Stroud planners have got it wrong with their rejection of FGR’s planning application for a new stadium.
The present New Lawn at Forest Green is arguably the worst sited football ground in the country, such restrictive parking and access must put off so many prospective spectators. The annoyance to Nailsworth residents who have no interest in football must be colossal. The land would provide valuable building sites for many new homes.
FGR have done so well in League Two and narrowly missed promotion. Another season may well see them elevated, at which time they will be hosting much larger clubs with many more fans so they need a new venue.
The wonderful new facility at the proposed site at Eastington would provide proper parking areas and is superbly sited close to a motorway exit which would limit congestion in Stroud.
The planning also includes assistance with the canal restoration which will improve Stroud eventually.
The decision of the planning committee is deeply disappointing and should be overturned on appeal.
