DOG walkers could face a £75 fine if they let their pets off the lead when visiting cemeteries.
Staff from Stroud’s Animal Welfare Service spoke to walkers on Monday at Bisley Road cemetery.
They complied with the rules, although two walkers told the wardens they considered the request ‘ridiculous and unnecessary’.
A spokesperson for the Animal Welfare Service said: “We think allowing your dog to run across people’s graves and sometimes urinating and fouling on them is ‘ridiculous and unnecessary’, and extremely distressing for family members.”
Simon Pickering, chairman of SDC environment committee, added that part of the cemetery is a designated nature reserve and home to a range of wildlife.
