Column by the leader of Stroud District Council, Doina Cornell.

I hope you are getting a chance to enjoy the summer in one way or another, although it is hard when there is still so much uncertainty for all of us, from jobs, to our health, to exam grades. Do keep safe whatever you are up to, and here are some useful activities if you are having a ‘staycation’:

As political leaders we are accountable to you for what we do about it, and one thing does remain certain – you get a vote and a chance to choose who is in charge, locally and nationally. So don’t lose your voice – Stroud District Council is about to contact you to ensure your electoral registration details are up to date.

With local elections and the Police and Crime Commissioner election taking place in May 2021, this is an important opportunity for you to make sure you can take part. Make sure you update your details if they have changed, for example if you have moved homes. You can apply for a postal vote, if this is easier for you. Most residents, whose information remains the same, will simply receive a letter confirming their details and stating that no further action is required.

If you are not registered, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote, or SDC can send you information explaining how to do this in the post.

To be eligible to register to vote a person must be aged 16 or over (a person may register to vote at 16, but may not vote until they are 18). British citizens, Irish citizens and qualifying citizens of Commonwealth countries can vote in local government elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections.
