HERE are some wonderful old photos of the SNJ which were posted through our letterbox.

The pictures were sent in by Darrell Smith an advertisement manager at the Stroud Journal - as it was then known - in the 1950s.

Mr Smith joined the paper in 1949, after leaving Marling School.

During the 1960s Mr Smith left the paper to enter the motor trade, getting a job at Arnolds Autos in Stroud.

From there he founded the Motor House Stroud, originally located in Ebley and is thought to be one of the oldest car retailers in the country trading under the same name.

In the 1990s the company relocated to Dudbridge, where it remains, having passed down from Darrell to his son and finally to daughter Julie.

Julie and her husband Jim Breeze, a former player with Gloucester Rugby Cherry and Whites.

The photos include a picture of Darrell, an SNJ announcement of staff changes, a photo showing the paper's entry into the Stroud Show Carnival and a SNJ staff party in the late 1950s.

In another photo, Darrell Smith and his wife are seen escorting film star Diana Dors when he was the chairman of the show society at the showground in Stratford Park.
