A NAILSWORTH family have persuaded LEGOLAND Windsor to change a rollercoaster ride policy which required their five-year-old disabled son to get out of his wheelchair and walk.

Sebby Brett, now six, was told he must prove he could walk before boarding the Ninjago ride in case of an evacuation, despite suffering from a medical condition similar to cerebral palsy.

After his parents, Joanne and Duncan Brett, campaigned for fairer treatment, the resort removed the policy for disabled guests on three rides, including Ninjago, and are looking to do the same for seven more before April.

“We want to thank the team at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort for being prepared to look again at their policies and for making such a massive positive change both on behalf of all of us and on behalf of thousands of other families,” said Mrs Brett.

Her daughter, Lottie, 5, said she is really excited that her brother Sebby can now come on the rides with her.

Health and safety procedures previously stated all guests must be able to walk 10 metres and up steps without assistance before accessing some of the rides.

Karen Glassey, Operations Director at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort, said: “The experience that Sebby had last year fell well below the high expectations we set ourselves at LEGOLAND Windsor and for that, we are very sorry.

“I am determined that we learn from this experience and that we continue on our journey to ensuring that our rides, attractions, shops and hotels can be enjoyed by as many guests as possible."

Last month, Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie held a debate in which she called on the government and the leisure industry to stop discrimination against people with disabilities at theme parks.

“I am really thrilled to hear this news and congratulations must go to Joanna for all she has done to make this change in evacuation and walking policy at Legoland. What a mum!” said Mrs Baillie.

“Credit must go to the company for listening and acting in such a positive way. One of the challenges now is to ensure the new approach at Legoland is replicated at all leisure parks in the UK as soon as possible.”

LEGOLAND Windsor have invited the Brett family back next year to see the changes they made.
