I TRIED the new vegan burger at the Stroud McDonald’s yesterday.

I am not a vegan, although for environmental reasons I am trying to significantly reduce my meat consumption.

Nor do I particularly eat many McDonald’s – I normally only reserve this for football away days with my team, Swansea City.

But I was intrigued to try out the new vegan burger called the McPlant.

Stroud has a lot of vegan eateries and a substantial population of the area do not consume or buy animal products.

After all, McDonald’s had said that its first ever plant-based burger “delivers the same great taste and experience you would expect from a McDonald’s burger”.

It follows three years of research and development to bring a vegan alternative to British and Irish customers.

The patty was co-developed with US-based alternative meat brand Beyond Meat and vegan cheese based on pea protein to match the taste of the chain’s regular cheese slices, as well as a new vegan sauce.

Therefore, the McPlant may be a welcome addition to the Mcdonald’s menu for many vegans in Stroud.

Personally, I thought it was quite nice.

It did not taste anything like a normal, greasy burger, but I guess that is also to be welcomed.

The McPlant had more of a subtle, softer touch.

I don't think it was too similar to a typical burger from Maccies, but I was glad about that.

The product is Vegan certified.

Would I have it again?

Despite enjoying the McPlant, I am not convinced that I would eat it again.

Anyone who eats a Big Mac or Quarter Pounder knows what they are getting.

We eat it – albeit in my case occasionally – because it is quick and convenient.

Although McPlant is better for the environment, if I were to eat healthier, plant-based food, I would not go to McDonald’s.

I would instead take a trip to one of Stroud’s many vegan friendly eateries.
