A NEIGHBOURHOOD has won a battle to keep a key route open when roadworks are not being carried out.

Traffic lights in Toadsmoor Road in Brimscombe are being replaced, with work scheduled to begin on Monday, July 27.

Work will be carried out from 9am to 4pm but Gloucestershire County Council had planned to keep the road closed entirely for two months until it was completed.

However, Chalford Parish Council was concerned about the closure because alternative routes through the Old Neighbourhood and Bisley are too narrow for lorries delivering to businesses.

It is also the only main road accessible to people living in Brownshill, Bussage, Manor Village, Chalford Hill and France Lynch.

After listening to the concerns, GCC agreed that the road would reopen with temporary traffic lights before and after 9am and 4pm.

Dom Morris, Gloucestershire County Council cabinet member for highways, said: “The work is essential to replace traffic signals in Toadsmoor Road as they can no longer be maintained because of their age.

“Having listened closely to the concerns of residents about this road closure, I have instructed our contractors to carry out the work from 9am to 4pm each day and there will be temporary lights to manage the traffic outside of these times.

“I hope this solution will cause less inconvenience to residents and businesses and appreciate their understanding while the work is carried out.”

A spokesperson for Chalford Parish Council previously said: “While we appreciate the work must be carried out, there must be some way of permitting residential access when work isn’t being carried out.

“We are continuing to talk with highways to see if the road can be opened at set times when work has ceased to allow vehicles to access the road.”

The road is due to reopen in two months time on Saturday, September 3.
