EMERGENCY services were called to an incident after two cars crashed before careering off the side of the M5 on Saturday.
The cars collided before both leaving the motorway and crashing into nearby trees.
Firefighters from Thornbury were mobilised as well as crews from across Avonmouth fire station and Gloucester Fire and Rescue after the cars collided on the southbound carriageway.
Crews were first called at 1.30pm to reports of a road traffic collision between junction 14 and 15 of the M5.
Emergency services from Avonmouth Fire Station, the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Highways England, Avon and Somerset Police Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service and Thornbury firefighters assembled at the scene.
The male driver of one vehicle was out of the car and was injured on the ground, a woman who had been driving the second car was still trapped inside the vehicle.
The teams worked together rescue both casualties and to stabilise both cars that had left the carriageway and were veering dangerously on the top of the motorway embankment where they had both collided with trees.
Both drivers were taken to hospital, one with a suspected fractured wrist.
A spokesperson for Thornbury Firefighters said: "Crews worked together to stabilise the vehicles, make them safe and rescue the casualties to hospital.
"Thanks to all rescuers involved for playing your part including the control room of each organisation carrying out a vital role behind the scenes."
