Christmas message from MP Siobhan Baillie

I would like to wish everyone across Stroud, the Valleys and Vale a very happy Christmas and New year.

This Christmas is the first since 2019 where Covid is not rearing its ugly head and disrupting family get-togethers. Thankfully, talk of viruses is unlikely to be part of the Christmas Day turkey dinner conversation in most households.

The brilliant vaccine programme means we can now live with the virus.

Yet financial pressures, the pandemic and the war in Ukraine is still overshadowing the world’s normal festive periods. My heart goes out to those in Ukraine trapped by the fighting – often without light and heating in fear of their lives.

I would also like to thank all the local families who have taken in Ukrainians fleeing the fighting. They will be far away from home this Christmas but are safe and part of our communities here now.

Cost of living pressures stemming from Putin’s invasion and the pandemic is being felt here too and I continue to do all I can to ensure the government is helping the most vulnerable this winter.

Substantial support has been made available through councils and charities but if anyone is concerned, then please get in touch.

On a positive note, there are tentative signs inflation is starting to ease with lower oil and gas prices.

Challenges remain but we have much to be thankful for in a country at peace.

Christmas is a time for family, community and spreading love and friendship. We are fortunate to have so many vibrant events to attend and local businesses to support.

Many people still struggle through loneliness at this time though and I ask that if you know of someone who might be alone this Christmas, please reach out. Even a cup of tea and a mince pie will make a difference.

I am excited for the new year and send my love to all.
