PLANS have been submitted which could see two major brands open at a rundown derelict site in the heart of Stroud.

Planners have applied to Stroud District Council for permission to build a KFC restaurant, a Costa cafe and new five apartments near McDonald's.

If approved, it would be Stroud's first KFC branch and the town's third Costa - with sites already in Tesco and in the high street.

Owners plan to create 28 new parking spaces - three disabled bays and five for tenants.

The KFC restaurant includes, a kitchen and servery area, a delivery driver collection section, customer toilets and seating.

According to council documents, there are also plans for a unit next door that has been labelled as a Costa.

At least 30 jobs are expected to be created, with 16 full-time and 14 part-time positions at KFC.

The site would be open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 11pm and Sundays from 10am to 11pm.

Other proposed works include erecting a two-metre fence, resurfacing the parking lot, lowering ground levels, and improving customer access.

The application does not include the name of the current owners, but it was submitted by an Elevation One Building Design Ltd agent.

They say the former Cotswold Indoor Bowls Club building will be ‘enhanced and improved upon’.

A planning document reads: “This application looks to enhance and preserve the nature and character of its surroundings, by bringing back into use a building that has remained empty for many years.

“The proposed scheme is to be for the conversion of the former bowls club into ground floor restaurant use and first floor residential use, so allowing for a mixed use scheme.

“The overall look and style of the building will be kept as original and made to look more attractive than it is at present.

“The external face of the building will be refurbished and made good in areas that have been damaged or need replacing.”

Previously the SNJ reported that the multinational fried chicken chain KFC was coming to Stroud in November last year.

A partner from KFC’s legal property advisors - BPE Solicitors - previously said they were ‘delighted' to be working with KFC Franchisee Gerard Nicholas.

BPE Commercial Property Partner, Paul Engelbrecht said: “Advising on growth plans like these is what I particularly enjoy working on.

“I am delighted to be working with Gerard in making his plans a reality.

“A thank you to the agent John Hawkins at Hawkins Watton for a sensible and pragmatic negotiation too”.
