A woman from Eastington recently ran her first ever London Marathon after being inspired by the work of a local hospice.

Rachael West, 37, had never ran a marathon before Sunday (April 23), but completed it to raise money for Sue Ryder, which runs Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham.

Rachael was motivated after seeing first-hand the compassionate palliative care that the charity's staff provide to people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families.

Rachael said about the day: "The atmosphere was incredible. The crowds were so encouraging, and it was like the whole of London came together in unison to support you.

“I was so grateful for their cheers and support.

"I saw my dad, partner, son and brother just after tower bridge which gave me the boost I needed, and my friend and her family were there at mile one.

“I would like to thank them for showing up in the rain to support me as well as everyone who donated. It means a lot.

"Crossing the finishing line was amazing. I cried when the medal was placed around my neck. I couldn't believe I had just run a marathon. I felt incredible.

"If anyone was contemplating applying for the London Marathon then I would say go for it!

“It was fab and something I will remember for the rest of my life."
