STROUD's Red Band took pride of place at the head of London’s annual May Day procession on Monday, providing a range of music for the marchers, ranging from traditional Socialist anthems to modern jazz and pop.
The march started at Clerkenwell Green and ended with a rally at Trafalgar Square.
This annual event has been celebrated for over 130 years in the capital, and is an important focus for working class solidarity.
Mark Coldrick, Band leader, said: ‘The Stroud Red Band has joined the annual London May Day procession in support of the trade unions that fight to maintain workers’ rights.
"With the cost of living crisis, now more than ever it is important to stand by those who are campaigning not just for fair wages, but for safe working conditions for their members and also for the general public.’
Comprised of a range of local musicians, the Stroud Red Band performs music from the heritage of the Socialist and International Solidarity Movements, together with a range of contemporary pop and jazz tunes.
As well as large national events such as the May Day procession, the Band plays at demonstrations, benefits and community events throughout the Five Valleys.
