STROUD volunteers were delighted to meet their food hero last week.

Volunteers from the Network of Stroud Hubs (NoSH) had the opportunity to meet their food hero, Jack Monroe, at the Festival of Food and Drink last weekend.

Ms Monroe, who has over half a million of followers on Twitter, gave a talk at the Sub Rooms on Friday, May 19.

Some volunteers and visitors to the hubs were given complementary tickets by Food Festival organisers.

Upland’s Food Hub volunteer, Lynsey Kelleher said: “Jack was raw and real.

"Stroud held her space and she got a standing ovation.”

One of the recipients of the free tickets said: "Jack Monroe's talk has left me thinking a lot! Her words were true and powerful.

"I had a fantastic night."

Jack Monroe, who is also known for her blog ‘A Girl Named Jack’, is an inspiration to the volunteers and staff at the Hubs because they too must stretch ingredients to overcome hunger in Stroud town’s neighbourhoods.

County Councillor David Drew describes the hubs as “a beacon of hope in very difficult times”.

Anyone can attend on a pay-as-you-feel basis, no questions asked.

Organisers would welcome wider community attendance to ensure the hubs become sustainable venues.
