FURTHER details have been released surrounding the opening of a much-loved and landmark hotel in Stroud.

It has been announced The Imperial Hotel - which has been renamed The Stroud Hotel - is due to launch in Autumn 2023.

The iconic 19th-century hotel and restaurant is currently undergoing renovations, which began in March this year, to return the building back to its former glory.

Hotel owners have also recently applied to Stroud District Council for permission to install signage, including projection signs and two menu boxes, at the building.

In addition, plans include installing planters, a pergola for an outside seating area and a coffee servery hatch.

A spokesperson for The Stroud Hotel said: “We are really excited to be opening the Stroud Hotel in the coming months.

“Renovation is under way and we will shortly be announcing an open date.

“The hotel will have a stunning new restaurant, the aptly named Bucknall Bar and 25 bedrooms including suites, a family room and dog friendly rooms.

“Our new function room is perfect for events, parties and weddings and we are now taking provisional bookings from December onwards.

“Our priority is to revive the hotel, with beautiful and contemporary rooms for guests visiting Stroud and a new dining and drinking destination for the locals of Stroud and the surrounding areas.

“It's a privilege for all of us working on the project to be part of the journey at this historic building and bring it back to life for those that loved it before and those yet to discover it.

“We look forward to welcoming guests in the near future."

The Imperial Hotel was built in 1863 by Stroud architect Benjamin Becknall, who also worked on Woodchester Mansion.

Many famous people have visited the hotel, including the Beatles and Queen Elizabeth II, who was then Princess Elizabeth, in 1950 as part of a tour of Stroud.

The hotel, which was formerly a Thai restaurant, shut down in May 2020 and has remained closed ever since.

The iconic building was listed as grade II last year as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

A council document for the application reads: “Historically the Imperial Hotel has been left to decay until plans for an extensive refurbishment were approved last year.

“Now the development is well underway.

“The proposal looks to install sensitive signage which does not harm nor detract from the historical significance of the area.”
