AN UPDATE was provided yesterday by Cotswold Canals Trust after the canal in Stroud overflowed on Friday.

Water spilled onto the towpath in two different locations -  behind Homebase and further down the canal close to Lidl in Dudbridge following Storm Babet.

The Cotswold Canals Trust posted a statement yesterday, Saturday, about the incident on social media.

It read: "We are aware that some areas of the canal have been overflowing due to heavy rainfall and an influx of water from brooks in the Stroud District.

"These areas include Lodgemore Mill, near the Clothiers Arms pub and the stretch of canal next to Lidl among others.

"This being said, we will be monitoring the areas affected and the wider canal very closely to mitigate any future issues and the impact of the rain.

"Stroud District Council are aware of this problem and will be working alongside us to manage floodgates within their limitations.

"We share your frustrations in not being able to provide any concrete solutions but please rest assured, we are working our hardest to maintain the canals and towpaths and limit the effects of this flooding.

"We extend our apologies to anyone whose properties have been affected by the high-water levels and please reach out if you would like to raise a concern or have any questions.

"Lastly, thank you to all the volunteers who responded promptly and attended the affected sites."
