MORE advice has been issued as Storm Ciaran continues to hit the area.

The Cotswold Canals Trust, which maintains the canal, has released a statement after the canal overflowed following heavy rainfall almost two weeks ago.

Water spilled onto the towpath in two different locations - behind Homebase and further down the canal close to Lidl in Dudbridge following Storm Babet on October 20.

A CCT spokesperson says their volunteers will continue to monitor the situation as the unpredictable weather continues today, Thursday, November 2.

They also stated the trust is planning to conduct a thorough review of their flooding response processes.

A statement reads: “Storm Ciaran is here so we just wanted to let you know what we will be doing to ensure any potential flooding is managed effectively and has a minimal impact on the community around the canals.

“Our volunteers will continue to monitor the weather as the storm progresses to make sure we‘re doing everything we can at that moment in time.

“As well as this, the lengthsmen and lockkeepers responsible for certain stretches of the canal will be setting the locks and paddles to the correct position in preparation for stormy conditions.

“We predict that any flooding is likely to occur at Wallbridge and Dudbridge so we have cleared vegetation and build from the bypass grills in these areas to allow excess water and runoff to be diverted through these channels.

“Moving forward, we will also be improving our system of reporting so that we can respond immediately to any issues that arise due to nasty weather and flooding.

“Our volunteering teams will be meeting to discuss how problems can be addressed in the long term and we will be conducting a full review of our flooding response processes.

“By fully restoring the canals, the risk of flooding will be reduced, compared to when it was derelict, through improved flow management and water level monitoring among other measures.

“Thank you for your understanding and make sure to stay safe and dry!”
