THE busiest railway stations in the area have been revealed

New figures from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) have pulled together data looking at the number of people entering and exiting every train station across the UK.

In total, there were 2.5 billion entries and exits across the UK in 2022-23.

This was a significant increase from 1.8 billion the year before, but still below the 3 billion entries and exits in 2019-20, before the pandemic.

The busiest stations outside London were Birmingham New Street, Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly.

Here were the most used stations in our area from April 2022 to March 2023:

Stroud railway station

Its figures show Stroud station had 545,000 entries and exits.

Kemble railway station

Kemble station had 353,000 entries and exits recorded in the year to March.

Cam and Dursley railway station

The next busiest station was Cam and Dursley, with 183,000 visits.

Stonehouse railway station

Meanwhile, Stonehouse station had 157,000 visits.

"It’s encouraging"

Michael Solomon Wiliams, campaigns manager of the Campaign for Better Transport, said: "It’s encouraging to see that station usage is on the rise, but to continue this upward trend and surpass pre-pandemic numbers, rail needs to be better value and more reliable.

"Instead of implementing another record-high increase, the government should freeze rail fares as it has fuel duty and make green public transport cheaper."
