AN INSPIRING community stalwart from Dursley has been nominated for a sporting unsung hero award. 

Gilly Meadows - who has been described as the “bedrock” of Dursley Bowls Club - has been shortlisted for a national award by Bowls England, the governing body of the sport.

Gilly has been on the club’s committee for 18 years and currently holds a variety of positions including club secretary, ladies' captain, safeguarding officer and fixture secretary.

She has been praised for her efforts in securing £38,000 worth of funding to support vital club projects as well as championing social events and coaching players 

Gilly has also been described as a “talented player and role model” who reached the 2022 Bowls England Ladies’ Pairs National Finals. 

Last year she was also a Gloucestershire County Champion of Champion Ladies’ finalist and County Mixed Pairs semi-finalist. 

“I was in shock when I found out about my nomination but very excited,” Gilly said.

“I am extremely honoured and thank my colleagues on the committee of Dursley Bowls Club for nominating me for this wonderful award. 

“At the end of the day, it is a privilege to be able to volunteer at the community grass roots level and raise awareness of this wonderful sport.

“So, now I’ve been shortlisted, let’s get the campaigning started!

Gilly's colleagues have also described her as having a reputation for being willing to share her knowledge and offer advice to other clubs in the area.

Meanwhile, the club on Drake Lane is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and Gilly is already planning a slew of fixtures and events.

A spokesperson from Bowls England said: “Gilly’s impact goes beyond the sport, emphasising mental well-being, reducing isolation, and championing social events. 

“Gilly’s infectious enthusiasm and thorough planning of Dursley’s open days and fun events bring in new members and raise awareness of the club.

“Her dedication to inclusivity, knowledge-sharing, and tireless efforts to secure resources for the club, including an electric wheelchair, is exemplary.”
