AN iconic and historic department store in Gloucestershire is due to close its doors. 

It has been announced Cavendish House located on The Promenade in Cheltenham is closing down.

The large store - which is currently owned by House of Fraser - is Cheltenham’s oldest department store and was opened 201 years ago in 1823. 

Signs displaying closing down notices have been posted on the store's windows. 

It is expected to close in 10 weeks' time.

The other House of Fraser store located in Cirencester previously shut down five years ago in January 2019. 

Meanwhile, the former Debenhams department store in the centre of Gloucester shut in May 2021. 

It is currently being turned into a new campus by the University of Gloucestershire.
