A FORMER professional footballer is preparing to tackle a gruelling challenge to raise funds for his son's school.

Scott Griffiths, who played for Luton Town before retiring eight years ago, is taking part in the Cotswold Way Ultra 100km in aid of the Shrubberies School in Stonehouse, which is attended by his son, Jesse, who is eight years old and has autism and learning difficulties.

Money raised will go towards a sensory garden and outdoor equipment.

Scott's wife Rhiannon said: "As a retired professional sportsman, Scott has always relished a good challenge, this one being particularly important personally.

"The school is incredible and staff have done such amazing work with Jesse and the other students and we don’t know where we would be without them.

"Outdoor play/learning is so important and the PTA’s main fundraising goals at the moment are for an outdoor classroom/shade for the main playground, a swing/permanent play equipment for lower school and a sensory garden for the Apperley Centre.

"All money raised through this event will go towards these projects.

"As a retired professional footballer, he is hoping to use his contacts in football to gain sponsorship but local sponsors will really help too."

Scott, who lives in Stroud, said: "The Shrubberies is an amazing school for those with varying additional needs and as my son Jesse attends there I'd like to help and give something back. Please support me and be part of doing something kind and special."

Originally from Essex, left back Scott began his career at Dagenham & Redbridge at 17 where they won the conference title and before playing for Peterborough United at Championship level.

He has also had loan spells at Chesterfield when they won the League 2 title, Rotherham United, Plymouth Argyle and Crawley Town.

His last team was Luton Town when they won the Conference.

The Cotswold Way Ultra on June 22 and 23 starts in Cirencester before looping through the heart of the Cotswolds, providing a stunning setting for 2,000 adventurers to test themselves.

2,000 athletes will pound their way through Rolling hills, picturesque villages, the Cotswold Way, footpaths and trails, enjoying  fabulous views en route.
