CCTV has been installed as part of plans to curb anti-social behaviour at a key gateway in Stroud.

Litter, drug paraphernalia, graffiti and dog mess have all blighted the canal path in Stroud in recent months.

Following several summit meetings, CCTV has now been installed at the underpass in Wallbridge, with hopes that this could deter any further anti-social behaviour in the area.

Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie said: "I am absolutely delighted that CCTV is now installed at the canal in Wallbridge.

"The canal trust volunteers told me that since it arrived there have been no incidents and the beautiful mural has not been defaced.

"The Cotswolds Canals Trust volunteers were completely fed up with litter, drug paraphernalia, graffiti and dog mess ruining all their good work and the area for visitors and residents.

"At a summit I held on the issue in February, everyone wanted action and as a community we have delivered.

"I am thrilled and I thank the PCC Chris Nelson for his work and the brilliant canal trust volunteers and local litter pickers who make such a difference.

"Tackling anti-social behaviour remains a priority for me."

Tony Davey, chair of Stroud Chamber of Trade, said: "It is very positive news that the blockers to installation have finally been overcome and that the CCTV is now installed in this area.

"It is a huge frustration that anti-social behaviour continues to have such a grip on parts of our town by those who do not value being part of the community or value the place around them.

"This area should be somewhere all can enjoy positively and is a tourist draw in the town, so I am hopeful that those who do not understand how to behave will be deterred from causing damage, destruction and alarm in this area.

"Hopefully this can be extend into the other areas where it is much needed, both within the town and other trouble spots along the canal."

A Cotswold Canals Trust spokesperson said: "We are pleased CCTV has been installed in the underpass and thank the volunteers for initiating this and everyone involved with the installation.

"With the new lighting, the underpass now feels much more welcoming, and we are pleased the beautiful mural has not been defaced since the installation of the CCTV and hope this continues to be the case."
