A STROUD GP is celebrating completing his 2000th vasectomy, a number greater than the male population of Painswick.
This procedure, performed under local anaesthetic in a GP practice and takes as little as 10 minutes, although it is important that patients understand the procedure should be considered permanent.
Dr Mungo Morris, from Stroud, explains what motivated him to specialise in this area.
He said: "I'm a firm believer that every child should be a wanted child, especially at this time of increasing financial and environmental pressure.
"I’ve had my own vasectomy so have a good understanding of what the patients are going through, and enjoy making conversation to take their minds off things.
"I get to meet some pretty amazing people and learn a bit about their lives.
"I’ve performed them on everyone from professional falconer to wrestler in the past! Routine general practice is challenging at the moment so even though I typically do ten vasectomies on a Friday, it can almost feel like a holiday from the day job… ”.
James Price, Dr Morris’s 2000th patient, describes why he went ahead with the procedure.
He said: “I decided to get a vasectomy as I have two amazing children with my wife of 16 years.
“I was made to feel at ease from the moment I walked in, the procedure was fully explained and was far less uncomfortable than expected.
"It was a little tender but the discomfort was easily managed with paracetamol.”
