THE FINEST home grown produce in Stonehouse wowed the crowds at the town’s second annual horticultural show on Saturday.

Everything from floral art and fruit and vegetables to handicrafts and wine was on display at the show in the Stonehouse Community Centre.

Hundreds of residents flocked to the event, which coincided with the annual summer fete on the nearby Laburnum Walk Playing Field. Among the prize winners on the day was Mary Barnes, who was awarded the Highfield Cup for the most outstanding rose exhibit and Lin Powell, who took home the Mayor’s Challenge Vase for the finest mixed floral arrangement.

Elsewhere, the most outstanding handicraft entry went to Pippa Coombs, while Dave Marlow won first prize in both the dry white and sweet red wine sections. Stonehouse mayor Mattie Ross said: "We saw some truly wonderful entries and there were far more exhibitors than last year’s show.

"It was a real success and a very busy day because of the summer fete on the playing field."

Gary Powell, chief steward on the day, added: "The standard of entries was outstanding.

"I think everyone learnt from last year’s mistakes and really pulled out all the stops."
