Following the sell-out success of Chas Townley's talk about the history of Stroud workhouse on Thursday 18 March, the Museum in the Park has announced details of a number of fascinating forthcoming talks.

During this Spring, the Museum is running a programme of local history talks covering the story behind the smallpox vaccination and the rich and varied past of the River Severn. Tickets are great value and places are limited, so book soon to avoid disappointment!

Illustrated Talk: 'Slaying the Speckled Monster': Thursday 22 April, 2pm A talk in two parts to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the eradication of smallpox, with David Mullin, Museum Collections Officer, who used to work at The Edward Jenner Museum in Berkeley. In Japan, Edward Jenner is regarded as a hero, but here in his home county of Gloucestershire, perhaps we forget the value of his work?

Advance booking necessary - call 01453 763394 The Secret Severn: Sunday 20 June, 11am - 4pm A special day of talks to celebrate the rich and varied past of the River Severn: its sailing ships and traders, its fishing and its disasters. Speakers include Colin Green, Dr Simon Draper and Chris Witts. Recent books including 'Where the River Bends' about the village of Arlingham will be on sale, accompanied by a small exhibition about the research and production of this book, which was achieved entirely by local residents.
