When you change your clocks to mark the start of spring this weekend, why not take the chance to check your smoke alarms at the same time?

On Sunday, March 28th, the clocks will go forward an hour and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging people to think about their family’s safety.

Chief Fire Officer, Terry Standing, said: “With spring upon us and the start of pleasant lighter nights, what better time than now to test that small item in your home which could save you or your family's lives?

“They should be fitted on every level of your home in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions provided. Get it, install it, check it and change the batteries regularly – it could save your life. And, whatever happens, never remove the battery to use it for other purposes.”

In January and February, the Service attended 99 and 60 home and chimney fires respectively, of which approximately 18% did not have a working smoke alarm.

However, the Service’s Community Safety Advisers have been very effective in increasing the number of smoke fitted throughout the county. Since they started in their new roles in January 2009, there has been a 70% increase in smoke alarms fitted by the Service. There has also been a 21% drop in the number of domestic fires the Service has been called to attend.

The CSAs identify fire risks within the homes of the most vulnerable people in our communities. They can fit smoke alarms free of charge, advise on hazards and how best to remove them and put householders in touch with other agencies who can provide systems such as telecare (equipment that allows people to call for help and assistance).

If you know of a vulnerable person who doesn’t have a working smoke alarm, Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service has a supply of alarms that can be supplied and fitted for free just by ringing 0800 180 41 40. Please remember you must get the permission of the person you are nominating.

Cllr Will Windsor-Clive, Gloucestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “We know that smoke alarms save lives. They cost very little and you can buy them in a DIY store or pick one up on your weekly shop at the supermarket.

“They can give you and your family the necessary warning to get out in the early stages of a fire, which should in turn allow us to get to you more quickly. So please take this opportunity to check your alarm, or if you haven’t already got one, then now’s the time to think about it.”
