SHADOW secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs Nick Herbert visited Tony’s Butchers in Stroud to highlight the Conservatives’ campaign for honestly labeled British foods.

Mr Herbert, who was joined on his visit by the Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Stroud Neil Carmichael, praised shop owner Tony Spencer for his commitment to stocking locally sourced meats, dairy products and vegetables.

The MP for Arundel and South Downs in West Sussex made the visit fresh from raising the topic in the Commons, where he accused the Government of failing to purchase enough British-bred produce.

"The figures show that the Government is sourcing a declining proportion of British food," he said.

"Less British poultry, less British beef, less British lamb, less British pork."

Tony, who also has a butchers shop in King’s Stanley, sources 80 per cent of his meats from within a 30 mile radius of Stroud and hand makes all his award-winning pies, pastries and faggots.

Speaking from the shop, Mr Herbert said: "I am more than impressed. Shops like this are good for local producers and good for food miles."
