Nailsworth and District Flower Arrangement Society: Open Day at Wycliffe College

OPEN Day at Wycliffe College, Stonehouse on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.

Our day began with an informative talk by Claire Cassidy from the British Heart Foundation our chosen charity this year for a donation from the day’s proceedings.

The stage was then taken by Bob Brown a Nurseryman with Cotswold Garden Flowers at Evesham - a business he runs with his son’s - one of whom assisted him with his talk and plant sales at our event.

Bob entertained the audience with a fantastic knowledge of plants and shrubs suitable for growing and cutting for flower arranging.

He also gave useful tips for placing plants in the best positions in the garden for maximum impact.

A break for lunch enabled people to purchase jewellery, cakes, clothes, flower arranging materials and plants from a variety of stalls before entering the dining room for a delicious two course lunch with wine or soft drink.

Raffle tickets on sale throughout the day entitled the lucky winners to flower arrangements from around the hall and the most coveted prizes of all, an arrangement by our afternoon demonstrator Nick Grounds.

Nick’s presentation entitled “Palimpsest” had created much interest over lunch, so it was with great anticipation that the audience re- assembled for the afternoon session.

Nick a National Demonstrator with NAFAS for many years soon engaged with the audience explaining his theme - a story unfolding as on a journey.

Throughout his session Nick entertained the audience with amusing tales of his life and experiences.

Using flowers and foliage to create stunning natural displays his love of these was clearly apparent.

To quote his own words “Listen to Mother Nature, and you will never go wrong”. Innovative simple home-made containers complimented his beautiful arrangements.

This concluded a very enjoyable day for the large audience who attended this popular bi-annual event.

Nailsworth Flower Club meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in the Town Hall.

Visitors are always welcome.
