TROY Davies of Mankley Road, Leonard Stanley admitted attempting to supply cocaine and possessing a lock-knife in court this week.
Davies, 21, was caught after police received an anonymous tip off that he was selling drugs in Nailsworth, the court was told.
Sharon Jomaa, prosecuting at Stroud Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, explained how police found Davies in a car with two other people and proceeded to search them.
"Police searched the defendant’s vehicle and on doing so found a quantity of white powder which he confessed to be cocaine belonging to him," she said.
"Subsequent analysis of the powder revealed that it was not cocaine but benzocaine, a cutting agent used when mixing cocaine.
"However, the defendant acted under the belief that he was selling cocaine and had sold £280 of this substance."
Paul Griffins, defending, explained that Davies was struggling on benefits and was trying to make some money.
"This was not a big time operation, he was in no way funding a luxury lifestyle," said Mr Griffin.
Davies will be sentenced on Wednesday, August 5.
