MADAM - In February this year I went on a trip to Iceland — the country not the shop — where at times it was -10 and there was plenty of snow and ice on the roads.

We landed at the airport, then had a thre- hour trip on a small coach to our destination.

Not once did I get thrown out of my seat because of potholes and neither did the driver keep having to swerve around them.

Why? Because there weren’t any. They use plenty of salt on the roads; also, it is the law for cars to use tyres with studs in them for grip.

So how come their roads can take the punishment but ours can’t?

Perhaps our highways people should invite Iceland’s highways people here to tell them where they are going wrong because they can’t seem to get it right themselves.
