GOALKEEPER Sam Russell could be set to make a shock return to Forest Green.
The popular former Forest Green number one could re-join for a second spell at the New Lawn after being made available for transfer by National League rivals Gateshead.
New Forest Green boss Mark Cooper is in the market for a second goalkeeper following the release of Steve Arnold last month, and worked closely with the Middlesborough-born keeper at Darlington.
A fans' favourite at the New Lawn, Russell,33, spent three years at Forest Green, making 144 consecutive appearances before he surprisingly lost his place in February 2015 to Arnold.
