Forest Green Rovers will be deploying the services of technical director Asif Rehmanwala to provide manager Mark Cooper with an edge this coming season.

Rehmanwala combines the role with his position as Commercial Director at Ecotricity where he oversees among other things, energy trading, and brings many of the same skills to the football club to help Chairman Dale Vince and Cooper build capability in their drive for promotion.

Rovers added Matt Tubbs to the squad

Asif said: “We have a collaborative approach using both performance analysis and the knowledge and insight of Mark and the management team in tandem – to determine what we need for each position, identifying players, and then recruiting the right characters.

“During pre-season and over the course of the season we can then use analytics as a tool to supplement the work done in training, and improve our tactical knowledge.

“Our intention isn’t to run things with ‘computer nerds’. However, we do firmly believe that it is essential to our performance as a team and that by using it we have created a competitive advantage.

“This is a strategy that we’re implementing across the club from the first team and then into the academy and will compliment the traditional football approach to give us a competitive advantage.

“Also, in the long run it will be a more sustainable model – identifying good young players early, and not spending money on players that aren’t good enough – as is hopefully evident with our recruitment this summer."
