FA Vase 2nd qualifying round - Newquay 2 Shortwood Utd 3.

GARY CORNWALL came off the bench to snatch a late victory for Shortwood make it through to the FA Vase first round.

The Nailsworth side had earlier taken a 2-0 lead, but a leg injury to keeper Martyn Pearce hampered Shortwood as Newquay pulled the tie level.

Earlier, they made a perfect start to the game, taking the lead after only four minutes. John Cant set up Pete Smith who fired home from 20 yards - his first goal for the club.

Pearce then made a good save to deny Newquay, but was injured in the process.

However, Shortwood went 2-0 up after 20 minutes. Cant and Ben Pugh made headway through the Newquay ranks and when the ball fell to Andy Hoskins he rifled the ball home.

It was apparent, however, that Pearce was really struggling in goal and Evans was forced to take him off and defender Will Steadman found himself in goal.

Newquay reduced the scoreline after 70 minutes. Five minutes later poor marking allowed them an easy finish.

John Embling was subsequently injured and replaced by Cornwall. With just four minutes to go Pugh took a free-kick and Cornwall ran through to finish well.

*Shortwood face another away trip - this time a tough task at Western League leaders Willand Rovers. This game will be played on October 6.
