Brimscombe & Thrupp boss Sam Prior has been left frustrated and slightly bemused - by a hat.

The Lilywhites suffered a set-back to their title hopes as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Holmer Green on Saturday.

Brimscombe missed a penalty late on but were cursing their luck when James Campbell's effort from six yards hit the cap Holmer Green's keeper was wearing which stopped it from finding the net and Prior knew from then it simply wasn't his team's day.

"We’ve had a shot from six yards and it’s hit the peak of the keepers cap," said Prior. "His cap went flying off and the ball didn’t go in so it was just one of those days.

“We found ourselves playing some of our best football, we just couldn’t put ball in the back of the net."

Brimscombe are still top but three teams below them all have three games in hand and will overtake them if they win them all but Prior is still positive and is not ruling out promotion.

“We were asking to win eight games in a row to have a chance," he said. "Teams still have games in hand but you can't read how it's going to go, that's football.

"We feel we'll finish in the top four which will be the highest in the club's history so that's progress. There's so many permutations but we're confident."
