BRIMSCOMBE boss Sam Prior felt his side should have scored more goals after their 5-1 pre-season friendly victory at Shortwood United.

Elliot Green’s brace and strikes from James Campbell, Ashley Caldwell and Ollie Pitt cancelled out Levi Mathews’ opener for Shortwood.

Prior said: “I’m pleased with the win and the overall performance. We decided to tweak the system slightly, more through availability than anything else, but to also make us slightly more compact in central areas, and after an initial 15-minute settling in period, we were excellent for the rest of the night.

“Our ball retention was as good as it has been for a while and our energy and fitness levels really looked close to where I want them.

“The only thing I was critical of afterwards was that we should be more clinical in front of goal. It really should have been seven or eight if we’d released our shots a lot earlier.”

Prior was delighted with two-goal striker Green, who has stepped up from the development side.

“Elliot trained with us since Christmas and was someone we were always going to try and get in this year,” revealed Prior. “He can play out wide or up front and his work rate is fantastic - still got some work to do with him, but we’ve certainly got a good player in there.”

Brimscombe have completed their summer recruitment by taking up the option of signing former Slimbridge midfielder Henry Birkett.

Brimscombe start the new Hellenic Premier Division season at home to Binfield on August 3.
