DOZENS of protesters took to the streets last night as outspoken commentator Katie Hopkins returned to the area.

Ms Hopkins - who is known for her controversial views on many issues - returned to the Star Inn, Whiteshill last night following an appearance in September.

Her comedy show, which was according to her website a sell-out, took place between 8pm and 10pm at the pub.

The protest, organised by Whiteshill and Ruscombe Community Solidarity, was planned for between 7pm and 8pm to coincide with the build-up to the performance.

A spokesperson from the group said: "A huge thank you to all who joined our demonstration, from Whiteshill and Ruscombe Community Solidarity, a newly formed group of local residents coming together to oppose hate speech.

"We look forward to representing and promoting our community's ant-racist, inclusive culture within and beyond Whiteshill and Ruscombe'.

They previously said in the run-up to the protest: "This action is a quiet but joyous celebration of positive values.

"We are a group of concerned residents using our right to freedom of expression while respecting their right to freedom of expression.

"We wanted to peacefully and calmly, clarify, present and demonstrate our values of kindness, tolerance, inclusivity, and hope not hate."

Katie Hopkins, whose statement can be read in full here, said: "How wonderful it is to be in a room full of people who simply want everyone to be as free and as happy as they can be, and to be afforded the same courtesy in return.

"We all need a good laugh right about now - and whether you are laughing with me or at me, at least we are feeling better together."

The show was part of Katie Hopkins' Silly Cow Tour taking place throughout 2024.
